Abstract

Referring to the remarkable achievements of social sciences and humanities over the past 50 years since the foundation of the Communist Party, as well as to the self – cultivation during our struggle for independence and freedom, the writer highlights the virtue and dignity of researchers as "cultural fighters" in the field of social sciences & humanities. The writer also pinpoints the limitations and weaknesses of the Vietnamese intellectuals and of the researchers in social sciences & humanities, especially in the context of a market economy. The article concludes with the criteria by which researchers & teachers of social sciences & humanities are evaluated in terms of virtues and academic titles. These criteria include tolerance, modesty, honesty, and "one-for-all devotion ".
