Abstract

This paper examines the linguistic strategies of politeness used by Ba Kien_ an antagonist in Nam Cao's story Chi Pheo. The first section of this paper briefly summarizes Brown and Levinson concept of "face". What follows is a list of positive politeness strategies. The second section analyzes how Ba Kien uses politeness strategies to attain his ultimate goals.
