Abstract

Drawing on a rich source of historical material and against the background of the French occupation, the writer examines the reasons behind the philosophical differences between the Confucian scholars of Southern Vietnam from the late 18th to the mid 19th centuries. The writer examines four different trains of thought reflecting the inner world of these scholars.
