Abstract

Location of surge arrester placement in protection scheme significantly affects the power station performance against overvoltages due to lightning stroke propagation. Failure probability of the equipments in transformer station will be dependent heavily on the front-of- wave slope and peak value of incoming lightning strokes. In the paper simulation technique and statistical analysis are used to estimate the risk of failure of important nodes and determine the appropriate locations of arresters in electric network. Economic and permissible risk estimation criteria are then implemented in a program allowing the determination of good locations of arresters in distribution stations protection.
