Abstract

The evaluation of slope stability by method of slices with circular slip surfaces proposed by Fellenius or Bishop is used widely in practice due to an acceptable accuracy without very complicated procedures. However, searching the critical slip surface in these methods is still based on the "trial and error" method, typically using the searching grid. Another approach is using Genetic Algorithms (GAS). GAs are search algorithms based on the mechanics of natural selection and genetics. Searching randomly but guided by a fitness function, GAs result in better solutions and take less time than the grid. For simplicity, we only represent the Fellenius method. The Bishop method is applied similarly.
