Abstract

Chitosan obtained by deacetylation of chitin is treated with alkali aqueous H2O2 solutions containing stabilizers MgSO4. Thus, 2.40 gram of 3.5% aqueous H2O2 was combined with 0.78 gram MgSO4.7H20, 90.06 gram deionized water, and 1.56 gram of 5% aqueous NaOH to give a bleach solution. This was heated to 70°C, combined with 5.20gram powder of lightly brown chitosan then allowed to react for 2 hours and to rest for 24 hours at the ambient temperature given a chitosan product which was light yellow.
