Abstract

The advantages of coir dust are 100% natural, bio-degradable, high water retention, moth and rot resistant. However, the lignin content in coir dust is high (about 58%), %cellulose is 29% and C: N ratio is 178. Therefore, it is difficult to delignificate naturally. In order to use coir dust in production of bio-organic fertilizer, it is necessary to decompose lignin and cellulose to obtain the suitable C: N ratio. In this paper, we isolated the actinomycetes from the coir dust piles and used it to decompose cellulose and lignin of coir dust – waste product from the growing of Pleurotus sajor-caju. After treated by the actinomycete (%lignin: 34%, %cellulose: 7% and C/N: 19) coir dust was used to grow vegetables.
